During this year’s black walnut harvest, New Harmony Native Trees & Shrubs is serving as a hulling station for Hammons Black Walnuts. How to harvest black walnuts:
Black walnut trees (Juglans nigra) are native to the Midwest. There’s probably a tree near you. When looking up at a black walnut tree, often the green nuts are visible along the branches and the leaves look very symmetrical and uniform. Ask permission to harvest black walnuts from trees that aren’t in your yard. Most people are very happy to have the nuts removed from their lawn.
Look for recently fallen black walnuts with a bright green shell. Collect nuts by hand or with a nut roller. Load them in buckets, totes, bags, truck bed, trailer, or anything else to transport them. Bring the nuts to the tree nursery as soon as you can. The sooner they’re harvested and hulled after they fall, the higher their quality.
We’ll run the nuts through a hulling machine to remove the outer green hull. You’ll be paid for their weight after hulling. Involve the whole family! Collecting black walnuts is a great way for kids to earn some pocket money.
